Annie Day Shepard Scholars (ADS)

NCCU Women's Center

The Annie Day Shepard Scholars Program supports undergraduate women to become engaged, confident and connected leaders at North Carolina Central University and beyond.

The program is open to first-generation, undergraduate women, including those who transfer into the university with less than 30 credit hours. If accepted scholars are required to reside on campus, in the designated living-learning residence hall for the first, two-years of their NCCU academic career. Currently each cohort begins with the acceptance of 15 scholars. Scholars may declare any major, but acceptance into the program will require participation in structured activities designed to increase investigative and critical thinking, interpersonal,  and problem solving skills that are necessary to successfully navigate through NCCU and into their professional careers.

The Annie Day Shepard Scholars program is not a social club or student organization, but rather an extension of the greater goals of NCCU, and the Women’s Center. As scholars progress through the four-year program, they are encouraged to pursue other interests where they can demonstrate their extended leadership skills and positively influence other women on campus and in the community.

Faculty and staff mentors, called Accountability Circle Leaders, and women in leadership at North Carolina Central University provide an empowering environment through structured programming based on a curriculum delivered through a living-learning community.

The four-year program includes mandatory participation in weekly meetings (up to two per week), seminars, cultural and team-building activities and outings, participation in 2 major community service projects annually, and in addition to full-program events, assignment to a smaller accountability-mentoring circle. Eligibility and receipt of benefits and incentives are based on consistent participation.

The program does not provide a scholarship. The designation as a “scholar” indicates the desire and commitment to continue a path of higher learning and develop one’s leadership and other intellectual profile.
