NCCU Tops U.S. News & World Report 2020 Rankings


North Carolina Central University (NCCU) continues to showcase its distinction as a top regional university in the United States in the 2020 rankings released by U.S. News & World Report on Sept. 9, 2019.

In the annual rankings, NCCU was listed as No. 11 among the 76 HBCUs included. NCCU also maintained its spots from the previous year as the third-highest rated public HBCU in the U.S. and second-highest among North Carolina HBCUs in the 2020 rankings.

In the category of southern regional colleges, the university ranked No. 21 among top public schools and rose to No. 54 overall out of 122 schools ranked. NCCU’s high marks led to the institutions being named the top HBCU in North Carolina, as well as the third-highest-ranked public campus in the state on the lists.

Additional high rankings that NCCU received as at top regional university in the south included:

  • No. 7 Top Performer on Social Mobility
  • No. 24 in offering Best Undergraduate Teaching
  • No. 44 Best Value Schools

“As a nationally-recognized master’s-level, comprehensive institution, North Carolina Central University continues to ensure that the combination of a robust and growing academic portfolio and supportive learning environment help us in fulfilling our No. 1 priority of student success,” said NCCU Chancellor Johnson O. Akinleye. “These rankings further showcase that the efforts and investments made by our faculty and staff into our scholars, many of whom are first-generation college students, are yielding high returns in the form of graduates who are equipped with a high quality education and proven leadership skills.”

In the past 12 months, NCCU has increased its five-year graduation rate, maintained a strong freshman-to-sophomore retention rate, launched new academic programs in critical workforce areas and expanded its research enterprise.

The rankings were based on the following criteria: retention and graduation rates, class size, faculty resources, student selectivity and alumni giving. More details regarding the America’s Best Colleges listings are available at http://www.usnews.com/best-colleges.
